The graph below shows the amounts paid each year to bring in new players. These figures may not have been quoted in the press but they are the figures that the club report in their accounts.
The blue column shows how much the manager has spent bringing in new players. He will of course have sold players and this is taken into account with the brown column. This highlights that in 2006 and 2008 money was spent but more was brought in. Only in 2007 was there a big outlay on players, which would have been undertaken in an attempt to stay in the Premier League.
