Celtic - Directors

The graph below shows the total amount of money paid to the directors of the club.

There are two big earners at the club. These are Peter Lawwell and Eric Riley. Lawwell took out close to £300,000 in 2006 and 2007, Riley now takes over £200,000 per year, and has grand total of over £2m over the last twelve years. Lawwell's toal is now £1.7m

Fergus McCann took £270,000 in total over his last two years in charge. Brian Quinn takes steady £30,000 per year.

The huge leap in 2003 came from the pay off that Ian McLeod managed to get for himself when he left. His contract allowed him a large amount of cash in return for a shortfall in expected earnings from shares in Celtic.

The Rangers directors have paid themselves £779.000 in 2006 and £665,000 in 2005, compared to the Celtic figures of just under £600,000 for those two years. Comparing with Spurs and Newcastle, who have similar incomes, the total pay for the directors at Celtic seems reasonable. (Daniel Levy pays himself £750,000 per year, and Freddie Shepherd paid himself £500,000 per year).

The 2008 figure shows a leap in takings for Lawwell from £393,000 to over £550,000, a 40% increase. This leap smacks of becoming convinced of your own importance. The 2007 financial results were excellent, and if there was a good remuneration policy in place the directors may have received a bonus for this. That there was another leap in 2008 when the financial results went down slightly does not feel right. At Rangers the highest paid director did the same thing and increased his takings to £668,000.
