It is vital to have cash to allow the general day-to-day running of the club to continue. The lack of cash is what has caused Portsmouth and Palace huge problems. No cash means no way to pay players, or even more importantly the Inland Revenue.

The graph below shows how the cash situation has been for Hull. Sometimes the cash comes from borrowing money, as was the case in 2008. The downside of that was seen in 2009 when lots of cash was spent paying off the loans. The other other big cash areas were bank loan interest and buying new players.
