Newcastle United - Current Share Holders
In the accounts of NUFC any shares which could be deemed to be under the control of the Hall family are lumped together. This means that the Cameron Hall pension fund, and the company called Copia that is owned by Douglas Hall come under the umbrella of Hall ownership. Similarly the Shepherd family have many of their shares in the Shepherd pension fund. In everything mentioned on this site the terms "Halls" and "Shepherds" covers their total holdings
Since becoming a PLC the Halls have steadily offloaded their shares. They have sold about 30 million of their shares for roughly £10m, or more than they originally paid for all their shares. This means they now only own 53m which on paper are worth about £37m. As well as owning all these shares that have overall now cost them nothing they have also taken dividends worth £14m. AND Douglas Hall has been paid an annual salary of £450,000. Many supporters have little understanding of his role or of the value he provides to the Club.
Some people say it is fair for them to make some money as they saved our club back in 1990 . This is a valid argument, or it was. Now they have made £12m in profits and would make a further £37m if they sold off their shares. All these personal profits coming directly at the expense of NUFC.
As the Halls have sold off shares the Shepherds have bought up shares. There is a pattern in their share buying. Several times just after a dividend has been announced they use the money given to them to buy up more shares. So for example in February 2004 the dividend they 'earned' from their shares was about £300,000. They then spent £400,000 on buying more shares in the club. As Freddy Shepherd is the one who decides how much dividend to pay and he pays himself £500,000 per year as chairman it is fair to suggest that NUFC are paying him all the money required for him to eventually own the club.
The Shepherds now own 34 million shares and those shares would look to have cost them roughly £8.5m to acquire. Their shares have brought them roughly £5m of dividends, so it could be said they have only paid out a net £3.5m, or just over 10p each. If they sold up tomorrow to a rich Russian they could expect to make a personal profit of £20m for their time with the club. (not including the £500,000 per year Shepherd takes as a salary for being chairman).
Many thanks to PM for sending us details of the accounts of Cameron Hall. Cameron Hall is run by Douglas Hall and his sister Alison, both of whom are on the NUFC board. The accounts show that for the last accounts they managed to pull together, for the period to 30th November 2003, Cameron Hall have made some huge losses. We will try and investigate these further and try and show you the record Douglas and Alison have in running other companies. With such a proven poor track record at Cameron Hall it is has to be a concern that 40% of the NUFC board is run by these people.
