It is vital to have cash to allow the general day-to-day running of the club to continue. The lack of cash is what has caused Portsmouth and Palace huge problems. No cash means nothing to pay players with

The graph below shows how the cash situation has been for the club. Things don't look too bad on the surface, with the claret columns. The underlying problem is that a pile of cash has been borrowed, or put in by the owners. This is masking a serious problem highlighted by the blue columns.

So over the last two years reported the club had to get external means of finance to survive, this came to nearly £47m, and is clearly unsustainable.
